Madonna in a Fur Coat by Sabahattin Ali

My first foray into Turkish literature. Beautifully sad book. Such wonderful descriptions and quotes in here--I want to collect them all. A super short must-read!!

Darkness Visible: A Memoir of Madness by William Styron

Heard about this in passing on the internet, immediately found a free pdf and free audiobook, listened/read it in just about 2 hours. Really important for me, especially at this time in my life. Just wish I had a physical copy.

Humanity: A Moral History of the Twentieth Century by Jonathan Glover

Read for my Ethics in International Relations class. Absolutely brutal and devastating book. Really important subject matter but you can't help but despair while reading it. History is constantly repeating itself and there is no pause button!!!!!!

Se questo è un uomo by Primo Levi

Read this for my Italian literature class. Read most of it in English, regrettably. Incredible work. I don't think I'd ever read a personal account of the Shoah before this. Such interesting and effective shifts in voice between chapters.

Polyester (1981)

My first John Waters (somehow). So funny. It was cool to see how much of that humor still lives online. Edith Massey I love you.

C'è ancora domani (2023)

Watched on the closing night of the FilmingItaly festival. This was great!! Great performances. There was randomly an Outkast "B.O.B" needledrop towards the end that SHOCKED me lol

Fino alla fine (2024)

Translated "here now" in English. Watched with a friend at the opening night of the FilmingItaly film festival. There was a Q&A with Muccino and Alec Baldwin (??) beforehand. Worst movie I've ever seen and that's no joke. It's like a 45-y/o CREEP wrote a Wattpad story about his weirdo fantasies. Horrible. Like, worse than I can possibly describe. At least it was fun to watch because my friend and I laughed thru the entire run time.

Night and Fog (1956)

Watched this for my Italian literature class, comparing the depiction of the Shoah in Levi's work with that of a film. This is the film I chose. I swear I've seen some of the clips from this before but I had never watched the whole thing. No words, absolutely horrific. The depths of depravity humanity has reached is difficult, if not impossible, to completely capture but this short film does a harrowingly good job.

Walk the Line (2005)

Watched this at a double-showing with A Complete Unknown in LA with American Cinematheque. Preferred this one tbh... the performances of Joaquin Pheonix and Reese Witherspoon were pretty wonderful.

Dr. Strangelove or: How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb (1964)

I watched this in high school but I didn't remember too much about it. Hilarious and scary!! Super relevant right now just in general, but especially in my life while I'm studying IR. Obviously Peter Sellers is magnificent but I adored George C. Scott.

Gummo (1997)

Yikes. Just gross. But that's kinda just what it's like to be from a rural area. I like this ultra-real, gritty type of story telling. Highlights the absurdity of life. Yucky!!!

The Day After Trinity (1981)

Watched in my Ethics in International Relations class. Interesting companion to Oppenheimer and my reading of Labatut's The MANIAC in January.

The Conversation (1974)

Writing this about a week after Gene Hackman passed. This is only the second or third film I've seen him in--the first in which he's the lead. RIP. This film is scary!! Great one. The last 20 minutes put a hole in my stomach.
